There is quite a mix of professionals and educators who are researching the idea of digital literacy and media literacy. I really do not think I could narrow it down to any one particular group of educators. The research that I have collected is from multiple countries and from various grade levels from K-12 and also includes research on students in college and includes pre service credential students.
I have found additional information to supplement the information in the research articles that I have found. I have read about a study from Stanford University (LINK) which analyzed students ability to decipher real news from fake news. I think this could lead into a continuation of my project from this semester. As I searched for published articles that included research studies, I found myself hitting many roadblocks and getting stuck down a lot of rabbit holes. There seems to not be a lot of research done on this subject of students digital literacy or media literacy skills. I think this shows that it is an important topic to study for our students who are growing up in such a technology rich environment where they are bombarded with all kinds of media that is often untrue and then goes viral.

Your topic is so timely. Perhaps that is why you are not finding many studies? Although the idea of media literacy is not new, I don't think I had really given any though to "fake news" two years ago. Suddenly it feels so important. I'm certain your students understand the relevance of this unit. As you pull examples from current events, they will be able to see themselves using these critical thinking skills now and in the future.

Emily and Christina, I completely agree with the timely nature of this study! As we are exposed to an excessive amount of information, being able to decipher what is real or not is so important. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
